Lee Cattermole admits he was 'really disappointed' to see Jack Ross sacked by Sunderland

Lee Cattermole admits he was 'really disappointed' to see Jack Ross lose his job as Sunderland manager.

Cattermole played under Ross during the last of his 10 seasons as a Black Cats player, as Sunderland reached two Wembley finals.

Unfortunately for Cattermole, and ultimately, Ross, Sunderland were defeated in both the Checkatrade Trophy and League One play-off finals and the Black Cats were consigned to another season in League One.

Failure to win promotion proved to be fatal for Ross who paid the price for an indifferent start to the 2019/20 campaign by getting sacked earlier this month.

Once his playing days are over Cattermole wants to become a coach himself although a return to Sunderland is 'not something that is currently on his mind.

Instead, when asked about a Sunderland return, Cattermole revealed his disappointment for Ross, who he believes did a 'fantastic job' at the Stadium of Light.

“That’s not something that’s on my mind," the 31-year-old told Football-Oranje when asked about a Black Cats return.

“Obviously I’m following Sunderland. I had the first two months where I didn’t follow them, but now I’m following their results.

“It’s a team that I’ve given so much time to.

“I’m really disappointed for Jack Ross, because he has done a fantastic job there.

“But Sunderland’s goal is to go and get promoted this year, and hopefully they can do that.”
