Lee Bowyer's top five moments in a Leeds United shirt

Leeds United visit Charlton Athletic this weekend and there will be a face in the home dugout that is very familiar to Leeds United fans - that of former Leeds United midfielder Lee Bowyer.

Bowyer made 265 appearances for the club between 1996 and 2003 and scored 55 goals during a time when Leeds were flying high in the Premier League and playing in Europe. So which were the moments over those seven years that fans will never forget...?

1. Capping a Derby County comeback, 1997

When Bowyer first joined Leeds United in 1996, appearances were hard to come by. He was signed by manager Howard Wilkinson who was relieved of his duties shortly after and found himself behind Alf-Inge Harland and David Hopkin in the pecking order. However he did make an impact on one of the most memorable games in Leeds United's Premier League era.

Back in the days before Derby County meant anything to Leeds, in the days when Frank Lampard was making his tentative first steps into the first team at West Ham, Leeds found themselves 3-0 down at home to Derby County. Bowyer came off the subs bench at half time and scored the fourth goal in what became an incredible comeback performance.

2. AC Milan winner as Leeds announced their Champions League arrival, 2000

Nineteen years ago this month, Leeds United took on AC Milan in the first group stage of the Champions League. Off the back of a 4-0 humiliation at the hands of Barcelona and a 1-2 home league defeat to Ipswich Town, Leeds hosted the Serie A team at Elland Road in extremely wet conditions.

With a squad missing key players such as Harry Kewell, David Batty and Jonathan Woodgate and including Tony Hackworth and Jacob Burns on the bench, Leeds managed to stop the Italian giants from scoring and Bowyer scored the only game of the match on 89 minutes, helped by the conditions and a blunder from goalkeeper Dida.

The weather only added to the legendary status of the night - one of the most memorable games to take place at Elland Road in the club's modern history. The following month Bowyer scored against Barcelona in a game which saw led to the Spanish team being knocked out of the Champions League. Bowyer's goal was the start of a run that took Leeds all the way to the semi-final of the competition against Valencia.

3. Assisting THAT goal at the San Siro, 2000

As every Leeds fan knows, Dom Matteo scored a great goal at the San Siro. What's less often spoken - or sung about is where that goal came from. Well it came from a corner delivered by none other than Lee Bowyer that Matteo got on the end of with a perfect leaping header.

It was a goal that meant everything - although AC Milan equalised through Serginho in the 67th minute, Leeds came second in the group knocking Barcelona out and progressing to the second group stage.

4. Running the show against Anderlecht, 2001

After qualifying for the second group stage of the Champions League, Leeds lost to Real Madrid then beat Lazio away. Next up was a visit from Belgian high flyers Anderlecht. It was Anderlecht that took the lead through Stoica on 65 minutes but Ian Harte scored less than 10 minutes later to equalise from 30 yards out.

Bowyer sent the Elland Road crowd into raptures, giving them another Champions League night to remember when he capped a man-of-the-match performance by scoring in the 87th minute to give Leeds a late victory. Leeds won 4-1 in the return fixture a week later and ended up qualifying for the knock-out stages.

5. Anfield winner, 2001

The 2000-2001 season wasn't all about the Champions League - there was plenty to remember in the league too. One particularly stand-out game was Leeds United's 2-1 win away at Anfield and the winning goal came from - you've guessed it - a certain Mr Bowyer.

Rio Ferdinand had put The Whites ahead in the fourth minute from an Ian Harte corner and in the 22nd minute, Leeds were 2-0 up when Bowyer put the ball past Sander Westerveld at the second time of asking. The second half became the Steven Gerrard show when the England midfielder pulled one back for Liverpool before getting sent off, effectively killing off any hope of Liverpool getting anything from the game.

As a player Bowyer had a knack for scoring when it matters. Marcelo Bielsa and his team will hope this lucky streak has not followed him into management.
