Lee Bowyer recalls 'eye-opening' Leeds United move and reveals his one Elland Road regret

Former Leeds United midfielder Lee Boywer has opened up on his spell at Elland Road.

The now Charlton Athletic boss spent seven years at the club, making more than 200 league appearances.

He rocked up at the club as a young Southern lad following his move from Charlton, and he says it didn't take long for the Leeds fans to blow his mind.

"I was only young, I was 17 when I first started playing and then moved onto Leeds at 19," he said on Sky Sports' Football Show.

"It was a big move for me. I couldn't do anything, I lived at home with my parents and my mum, I was fortunate that she did everything for me, cooking, cleaning, ironing - everything!

"Then I had to move up North which seemed like the other end of the earth to me - I was a young London boy.

"I moved up North and as a football club, it opened my eyes. It was going from one level to another.

"Talk about support, the Leeds fans...wow. It was a completely different experience for me."

Bowyer was at the club during an impressive spell for Leeds in the Premier League and in the Champions League.

Ultimately, he didn't win any silverware during his time at the club, but that shouldn't have been the case.

"The Leeds side, we were a good side," he added.

"We didn't really, in my eyes, have superstars. You lads (Liverpool and Man United) had the outstanding players who could win you games from nothing, but we competed well.

"I think a strong point of our game was the physical side of our game. We had a young side and we could compete, we surprised teams.

"Once we had that side, we always done well against the big boys.

"One season, I think it was around 2002, we were flying and we were up the top for a long period of time but we just run out of steam.

"We were a good side and we should have won something.

"It was disappointing coming away from there and not win anything, it was really disappointing."
