Lecturers at three universities in Glasgow area vote to strike over pay

Lecturers at three higher education institutions in Glasgow and the wider area have voted to go on strike in a row over pay.

The EIS, Scotland's teaching union, confirmed that six institutions in Scotland met the legal mandate required for strike action, among them Strathclyde University, The Glasgow School of Art and The University of the West of Scotland- which has campuses in Paisley, Blantyre, Dumfries and Ayr.

A statement released by The EIS on their website noted that lecturers at the institutions voted overwhelmingly to strike in a ballot organised between The EIS and the University Lecturers' Association.

A total of 437 lecturers across Scotland took part in the vote, with 343 in favour and 94 against.

EIS General Secretary Larry Flanagan said: "EIS-ULA members have voted overwhelmingly for strike action in pursuit of a fair cost of living pay award.

"This action is a last resort, and results from management's unwillingness to negotiate a fair offer".

"We continue to seek a fair negotiated settlement and even at this late stage, we hope that management will come back to the table and deliver a fair cost of living increase".

Details of any strike action are to be considered by The EIS next week.
