Lecturers and ten students from West Lothian college go racing!

Students and staff from West Lothian College took part in the Greenpower race last month at East Fortune Race Track.

Lecturers Steven Morrison, Scott Nicol and Neil Campbell took 10 students from the Introduction to the Automotive Environment group and the Engineering FA students to compete in the event.

Despite having only three weeks to build their cars, both groups’ vehicles passed scrutineering and were allowed to race.

There were mixed results for the students as the automotive team were hit with a blown tyre during the race which meant they came in last. Despite this the team were able to getthe vehicle repaired and back on the track to finish the race.

The engineers faired a little better with no mechanical issues meaning they had a full day racing and finished in 19th place.

Steven Morrison, lecturer in the Construction and Motor Vehicle centre, said: “Although our results were not the best at this outing, the students had a great day and were a real credit to the college showing great team working, attitude and sportsmanship throughout the day. They took control of all repairs and adjustments on the vehicles in the pits between the races and stayed positive when faced with challenges during the event. They came up with solutions, while helping each other to make sure both cars were ready for racing.”

The vehicles that won the event were two international teams one from Poland who came first and third and a team from Portugal who came second.
