Lech Poznan profiled: A guide to Rangers' Europa League opponents and what type of team they are

Rangers will face Lech Poznan for the first time in European action when the Polish outfit arrive at Ibrox tonight.

Here's all you need to know about the Ekstraklasa side.

Location and background

The club were founded in 1922 in the Polish city of Poznan. They play at the super-impressive Stadion Meijski which holds more than 43,000 fans.

They have won the Polish top flight seven times, and the Polish Cup five times in their history.

They are currently managed by Dariusz Zuraw who spent a large chunk of his career playing in Germany for Hannover 96.

Poznan is a club known for its fanatical support and the 'Poznan' celebration which sees fans turn their back to the pitch, link arms and jump up and down has been replicated across Europe.

Form and style of play

Poznan are known for their open and expansive style of play. They score plenty of goals, but they concede plenty too. In the lead up to this match Gerrard spoke about how he wants to avoid a "game of basketball" with the ball going from end-to-end non stop. Last season they finished second in the Ekstraklasa, only three points behind champions Legia Warsaw.

Their domestic form this campaign has been mixed at best, and they sit in tenth place in the Polish top flight. They've won two matches, drawn three and lost two – scoring 13 goals and conceding 11.

In their last three matches they have drawn 1-1 at home with Cracovia, lost 2-1 away to Jagiellonia and beaten Piast Gliwice 4-1 away.

In European football they lost their opening group game 4-2 to Benfica in Poland. They overcame Belgian side Charleroi in the play-offs to reach Group D.

Gerrard said of Rangers' opponents: "[The Benfica game] was very open. Poznan were in the game for long periods if not the majority. The game was only taken away from them in the final stages of injury time.

"I've watched that game closely. Both teams, but at the moment my focus is mainly on Lech Poznan.

"They had chances in the game and there could have been more goals. It was a very open game, similar to watching a game of basketball. It was attack one end and then an attack the other. It was two excellent sides on show but looking at what type of game plan I'm looking for, it's important we stop counter attacks, we're well organised and we've got a real good shape about us.

"If there's any space or we don't defend well out of possession tomorrow, they are a team that can certainly hurt you."

European history

Lech Poznan are far from regulars in the Europa League group stages. Prior to this year their last appearance was in the 2015/16 season where they finished third in a group including Basel, Fiorentina and Belenenses.

The most impressive moment in their recent European history was qualifying out of a group including Manchester City, Juventus and FC Salzburg in the 2010/11 campaign. They drew twice with Juventus en route to finishing second.

To reach this season's group stage they beat Valmiera, Hammarby, Apollon Limassol and Charleroi.

Key players

Most would recognise 21-year-old midfielder Jakub Moder as their most dangerous player.

Moder signed for Premier League side Brighton in the summer for a £9.5million fee, and has been loaned back to the Polish side.

You feel key to Rangers' success will be stopping him playing in the midfield.

Sweden international Mikael Ishak could be the danger man in attack, having had no problem in finding the back of the net since arriving at the club in the summer.
