LeBron James says he will definitely own NBA team: ‘Ain’t no maybe’

With LeBron James heading to his 15th NBA All-Star game in Charlotte this weekend, and his Los Angeles Lakers in the middle of a nine-day break between games, much of the coverage surrounding James has been of the long-look variety.

ESPN’s Brian Windhorst explored the idea of LeBron James owning a team once his playing days are done. On Wednesday and early Thursday, The Athletic‘s Joe Vardon published his own story on the subject — with Vardon getting James to go on the record about owning a team.

As LeBron told The Athletic in one of two conversations:

Ain’t no maybe about it, I’m going to do that [expletive].

“I want to stay around the game of basketball,” LeBron said in a second conversation with The Athletic.

While it’s not exactly clear which team James will come to own, both Vardon and Windhorst report that James has positioned himself to be the first in line once a team does become available for purchase.

The Cleveland Cavaliers would likely be a dream scenario, but there are legitimate questions about whether Dan Gilbert would sell the team to James.
