LeBron James's post-match pep talk to son sets right example for parents

Normally stories of parents at their children's sports matches revolve around over-enthusiastic parents screaming on the sidelines, living vicariously through their offspring.

NBA star LeBron James, however, has given all sport-watching parents a lesson in how to support their child correctly, posting video of a post-match exchange with his son to his Instagram page.

After the match in which 11-year-old Bryce James was failing to sink his shots, James took his second-born son to one side to impart a short, confidence-boosting pep talk about his performance.

"You get too down on yourself for no reason," he said.

"You made three of the biggest plays of the game," he added, before outlining the ways Bryce impacted the match.

That Bryce has lofty standards for himself on the court is perhaps to be expected considering his father's fame, but James quickly emphasised what his son did well, rather than what went wrong.

James, one of the NBA's all-time great players, currently averages 27.2 points per game, but reinforced to his son that scoring is not the only way to help the team.

"If you're missing shots or making shots, don't worry about it kid!" James said.

"You played a hell of a game.

"You don't got to worry about making shots or missing shots, alright?"

James finished with the only words that matter.

"I'm proud of you man. Alright, now go with your team."
