LeBron James on detailed memory, basketball IQ: ‘I’ve always had it’

Although the incredible athletic ability that LeBron James has displayed throughout his career generates a lion share of the praise about him and his game, the other aspect of LeBron’s game that contributes to his all-time greatness is his unique ability to not only read the game in real-time but then remember every detail of every game he’s ever played.

LeBron’s mind and memory was the subject of a new story by Melissa Rohlin of Sports Illustrated, When he was asked if it’s something that’s developed, he answered that it’s something that has simply been there all of his life.

“I’ve always had it,” James told Sports Illustrated. ” A lot of my friends when I was younger playing the game, they were like, ‘Man, how did you remember that play? Or how did you remember that? It was so long ago.’ I never thought about it. I didn’t even know what photographic memory meant when I was younger until I got older. It’s something that I was born with or blessed with.”

LeBron will often show up his incredible memory during postgame press conferences or when he’s asked to retell the story of a game from years ago. Just a couple of weeks ago, LeBron broke down a game from his high school career in great detail, including scouting details of the opposing team.
