Take LeBron James off the list of potential free agents in the summer of 2021.
James, who turns 36 years old on Dec. 30, and the Los Angeles Lakers reached an agreement on a two-year, $85 million contract extension, James’ agent, Rich Paul of Klutch Sports, said.
The deal will keep James with the Lakers through the 2022-23 season, and his son Bronny will graduate in 2023 — and possibly be draft-eligible if the NBA changes its age requirements.
James shows no obvious signs of slowing down as he gets ready for his 18th NBA season. In October, he led the Lakers to the 2020 championship — his fourth overall and his fourth Finals MVP and the Lakers’ first title in a decade, tying the franchise for most championships (17) with the Boston Celtics.
During the 2019-20 season, James averaged 25.3 points, 10.2 assists and 7.8 rebounds, marking the first time he posted double-digit assists per game in his career. In the playoffs, he averaged 27.6 points, 10.8 rebounds and 8.8 assists with five triple-doubles.
Now, the Lakers just need to wrap in Anthony Davis’ contract — which is expected to happen soon — and the Lakers will be set with their two stars for the next few seasons. Paul also represents Davis.
