Following the record-breaking success of Halloween, LeBron James has set his sights on rebooting another classic horror franchise, Friday the 13th.
The basketball player’s production company SpringHill Entertainment, along with Vertigo Entertainment, have entered talks with writer Victor Miller – who penned the original – to acquire rights to the iconic series.
While no writer or director is attached to the project, the hockey-mask wearing slasher Jason Voorhees is expected to return, having been at the centre of the franchise since its conception in 1980. The series was last rebooted in 2009 but no sequels to that movie were released.
James’s SpringHill Entertainment have already had a big year. Just over two months ago, they purchased the rights to Space Jam, announcing that a sequel – starring James and produced by Black Panther’s Ryan Coogler – is currently in production. Space Jam 2 will mark James’s second high-profile acting role, having previously won adoration for his role alongside Amy Schumer in 2015’s Trainwreck.
The news of a Friday the 13th reboot comes just days after Jamie Lee Curtis’s Halloween reboot grossed $77m (£59m) over the weekend; the biggest ever debut for a film with a female lead over 55. Curtis once again played her iconic character Laurie Strode.
