LeBron James happy Juwan Howard will be next Michigan coach

Although he was part of the initial crew of interviews for the head job with the Los Angeles Lakers, it always seemed unlikely that Miami Heat assistant Juwan Howard would end up being their choice as the next head coach. But even though Howard didn’t end up working with his buddy LeBron James again, James is happy that his former teammate is likely to lead one of college basketball’s biggest programs.

Juwan Howard agreed to a five-year deal to become Michigan’s head coach, according to Stadium’s Jeff Goodman. LeBron wanted it to be a done deal yesterday.

Howard was a teammate of LeBron’s when the Miami Heat won both of their championships in 2012 and 2013, while also playing a part on their 2011 NBA Finals team. Some said that in Howard’s last year, in which he only appeared in seven games, he was basically an assistant coach. After that, he was an assistant under Erik Spoelstra with the Heat and most recently was put in charge of running Miami’s defense, which typically overperformed expectations.

Even though LeBron is an Ohio State Buckeyes fan, he will likely be pulling more for Michigan than usual.
