LeBron James doesn’t agree with the position of Kyrie Irving that restarting the season and having the league go to a bubble at the Walt Disney World would be a distraction or stop legitimate efforts to push for social and racial justice in the United States. According to The Athletic’s Sam Amick, that was one of the main reasons why LeBron didn’t bother to join a call organized on Friday night by his former Cavs mate because LeBron doesn’t believe playing will negatively impact his advocacy.
LeBron’s position is not a new one, given that he’s always been of the opinion he has a platform that he has as one of the most vocal athletes ever because he’s simultaneously one of the best athletes in sports history. But what is new now is the stance from Irving, who asked the players to take more time to consider their own position and by extension, the value of continuing this NBA season and likely the next.
The player’s leadership and their representatives have laid out all of the financial stakes, it will be interesting to see whether the rank and file players agree more Irving’s position or if LeBron’s position will be the one that ultimately wins over the players.
