As Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James continues to use his platform to call out states engaging in voter suppression, James was hoping to call out the state of Kentucky for closing thousands of polling places ahead of Tuesday’s primary election.
According to USA TODAY affiliate the Louisville Courier-Journal, a judge ruled late last week that Kentucky’s two most-populous counties did not need to add additional polling places. LeBron also called out the state of Georgia for having absurdly long lines to vote in predominantly Black neighborhoods.
James and his business partner Maverick Carter helped form a non-profit called “More Than a Vote,” along with other huge names in the sports world like Draymond Green, Allyson Felix, and Skylar Diggins-Smith. The goal of the organization is to make a positive impact on Black voter turnout while pushing more to register while also fighting against laws and decisions that directly oppress the Black vote by making it significantly harder to cast a ballot.
