LeBron James and Luka Doncic make NBA history during Lakers win over Mavericks

During the Los Angeles Lakers thrilling victory in overtime against the Dallas Mavericks on Friday, LeBron James and Luka Doncic made NBA history. The pair of superstars became the first two opponents to ever record 30-point, 15-assist triple-doubles in the same game. LeBron–at the age of 35–finished with 39 points, 16 assists and 12 rebounds. Meanwhile, the 20-year-old Luka offered 31, 15 and 13.

After Doncic found Dorian Finney-Smith open in the right corner to give Dallas a three-point lead during the final seconds of regulation, it appeared the Mavericks were on their way to securing the win. But LeBron would counter that assist from Luka by dishing out a perfect dime of his own to Danny Green in the opposite corner who’d tie the game at 103 for the Lakers and send it to overtime.

LeBron now owns a regular-season’s worth of triple-doubles, notching his 82nd all-time in the victory over Dallas. He is currently 25 triple-doubles behind Lakers assistant coach Jason Kidd for fourth on the all-time list. Kidd finished his Hall of Fame career with 107 and he is currently just behind Magic Johnson with 138. Meanwhile, in a little over one season, Luka has already collected 10 triple-doubles on his young career.

According to ESPN, LeBron also became the third player in NBA history to record at least 30 30-point triple-doubles during his career. He joins that list alongside Oscar Robertson and Russell Westbrook. The effort in Dallas would also make James the first Lakers player with 30 points, 15 assists and 10 rebounds in a game since Magic did it for Los Angeles back in 1990.

LeBron finished the night 13-of-23 from the field and 4-of-9 from 3-point range. He’d also close the overtime period by scoring eight of the Lakers 16 points in the extra session. Anthony Davis, meanwhile, finished with 31 points and eight assists while making several key baskets in the second half as Los Angeles collectively battled to erase a double-digit deficit on their way to win No. 4.
