Lebanon’s Prime Minister-designate Saad Hariri has stressed that he will not change his position concerning the formation of the new government.
“I will not change my stance, and these words do not aim to challenge anyone, but result from my absolute belief that the political rhetoric does not lead anywhere, nor does it solve the problem of electricity or waste, or the demands of the citizens,” Hariri said.
"Compromises are made when they are for the interest of the country, and I was always among the first people to seek compromises.”
“But what is currently proposed has nothing to do with compromises nor with the interest of the country and the Lebanese,” he added.
Hariri was referring to demands made by Hezbollah-backed Sunni MPs to have a representative in the new cabinet.
The PM-designate has refused to give up a portfolio that would otherwise go to his own party.
Hariri made his remarks on Thursday during a meeting of al-Mustaqbal parliamentary bloc and the movement’s elected bodies at the Center House Beirut.
During the meeting, the consultative legislative forum, which organizes dialogue between the bloc and the elected bodies, was launched.
Hariri stressed the importance of the forum that is a bridge of cooperation and exchange of expertise between the bloc and elected bodies.
He said reforms are needed for several ministries and sectors.
Also, laws need to be amended and draft-laws to be adopted in the next phase, within the framework of implementing the decisions of the CEDRE Conference that was held in Paris last April, the PM-designate added.
