Lebanon's Financial Prosecutor Launches Probes Into Customs Authority Chief Over Suspected 'Waste of Public Funds'

Financial Prosecutor Ali Ibrahim Thursday filed charges against Lebanese Customs chief Badri Daher for squandering public funds, and the case was referred to Beirut's acting First Investigative Judge.

This came hours after Daher challenged anyone with claims against him to provide their evidence to the Lebanese judiciary.

Daher's statement came following accusations made during a TV program which claimed evidence of corruption by Daher.

He later held a press conference in which he responded to what he said were fabrications and defamation attempts against him.

This comes as a nationwide protest movement over poor services, economic woes and official corruption enters its fourth week with demonstrators hoping to expel an elite they say has ruled the country like a cartel for decades.
