Lebanon reported on Saturday two deaths from the novel coronavirus in the past 24 hours, taking its tally to 24.

The health ministry registered eight new infections, taking the country’s count to 704.

Lebanon on Friday extended its coronavirus lockdown by two weeks until May 10, but Prime Minister Hassan Diab said the economy would be reopened in gradual phases over the coming weeks.

He said the government had done a risk assessment on what sectors could be slowly relaunched in the coming weeks, without specifying which ones would come first.

The higher defense council laid out a five-stage timetable for reopening the economy, with the first beginning on April 27 and the last on June 8.

The government shortened the curfew by one hour to start at 9 pm.

Death toll mounts in Algeria

Sudan, meanwhile, reported 39 new cases and one virus death in the past 24 hours.

The health ministry said 26 infections were confirmed in Khartoum state and one in each of al-Jazirah, Red Sea and Darfur states.

Saturday’s figures raise Sudan’s cases to 218, including 17 fatalities. Nineteen patients have recovered.

In Algeria, the virus cases continued to rise, with 129 infections reported in 24 hours.

The north African country now has 3,256 cases and it has reported a total of 419 deaths, including four on Saturday.

Morocco registered 139 coronavirus cases, raising its count to 3,897.

The health ministry said 537 patients have recovered. The country’s death toll stands at 159.
