Armed men fired at a patrol of Lebanon’s Internal Security Forces (ISF) in the northern city of Tripoli on Monday night, killing ISF members, state news agency NNA said.
The security forces and the army chased down the attackers and encircled them, it said. A security source also said ISF members were killed.
“A group of men attacked an ISF patrol along the port road in Tripoli, killing Corporal Johnny Khalil and critically injuring others,” NNA quoted a security statement as saying.
The perpetrators put the ISF car on fire. The reason of the attack is still unknown.
The attack was followed by a sound bomb thrown in front of Tripoli’s ISF headquarters, wounding one civilian. The assailants opened fire on a Tripoli street in the vicinity of a maternity center. Security patrols chased the attackers and one army soldier was wounded during the operation.
According to television reports, the leader of the group had recently returned from Syria, where he fought with ISIS.
