Prime Minister-designate Saad Hariri is set on Tuesday to settle his position from the so-called Sunni obstacle to Lebanon’s cabinet formation process during a press conference at the Center House in Beirut.
Hariri’s scheduled press conference comes following comments delivered Saturday by Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah, who said that his party will continue to support the demands of independent Sunni MPs “for one year, two years and forever.”
The six pro-Hezbollah deputies are demanding a representation by a cabinet minister despite Hariri’s rejection.
Several political parties voiced on Sunday their rejection to Nasrallah’s stance, which signals more delay in the cabinet formation process.
Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea tweeted that the Hezbollah leader’s speech was unacceptable and illogical.
Lebanon’s Parliament kicked off Monday legislative sessions with 39 items on its agenda despite the government deadlock.
Speaking during the 16th Conference of the "Islamic Rissala" Scout Association held in Ain el-Tineh, Speaker Nabih Berri said: “The real test (that the cabinet faces) is in the decisions it will adopt during the first one hundred days of its mandate, and the extent of its response to the implementation of reform laws."
On Sunday, the PM-designate attended a luncheon hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron in honor of heads of state and officials participating in the Paris Peace Forum.
Hariri had met with International Monetary Fund Director Christine Lagarde to discuss the economic situation and the IMF's relationship with Lebanon.
