Lebanon: Anti-Corruption Measures Spark War Among Judges

Minister of Justice Albert Serhan (NNA)

Minister of Justice Albert Serhan on Monday referred three judges to the Disciplinary Board upon the recommendation of the Judicial Inspection Commission.

Several court employees were also referred to the Board, according to a statement by the minister.

“As a result of the follow-up investigations conducted by the Judicial Inspection Commission, the Commission issued three decisions on March 29 for the referral of three judges to the Disciplinary Board of Judges,” the statement said.

“The head of the Inspection Committee (Judge Burkan Saad), in accordance with his powers of law, issued a decision to refer four judicial assistants to the disciplinary board of judicial assistants, and two of them were suspended from work until a decision is made on their status,” it added.

Judicial sources told Asharq Al-Awsat that this decision was preliminary and would be followed by other steps, “as some judges were still being investigated by the Central Inspection so that the appropriate decision is made as a result of the investigations.”

The sources noted that some of the judges were being investigated for their responsibility for loopholes committed by the staff.

Meanwhile, a decision by Mount Lebanon Prosecutor Judge Ghada Aoun to stop two judges in Mount Lebanon’s Public Prosecutor Office from working after suspicious information about them sparked a wave of anger among some judges.

Legal sources told Asharq Al-Awsat that the decision “bothered several judicial authorities, considering that such a decision is entrusted to the Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Judicial Inspection Authority, and is only taken after investigations conducted with the concerned judge.”
