Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri announced on Monday that his Mustaqbal Movement won 21 seats at parliament in Sunday’s parliamentary elections.
He said during a press conference from Beirut that the elections grant his movement a “big bloc” in parliament.
“Through the will of the people, we were victorious on all fronts,” he declared.
“We were banking on a better result and a bigger bloc,” he added however.
The very staging of the elections is a “major accomplishment,” continued the premier.
The elections, the first since 2009, were postponed twice for security reasons and political disputes over an electoral law.
“The Lebanese voted for the Mustaqbal’s agenda and we extend our hand to those seeking to cement stability,” stressed Hariri.
He underlined political consensus to ensure the proper functioning of the country, saying that “we will not allow some sides to impose new norms regarding” the positions of the presidency, parliament speaker and premiership.
“I am still the ally of President Michel Aoun because this alliance achieved stability in Lebanon,” stated Hariri.
Moreover, he added that the next government will be formed through consultations, revealing that he would to step down from his post if the circumstances in the country were not to his satisfaction.
