A Covid-19 vaccination campaign for army personnel kicked off Thursday at 21 military centers across Lebanon.
Lebanese Army Commander Joseph Aoun had started off the inoculation campaign.
The vaccination process will take place according to the schedule of priorities that has been devised by the committee overseeing the anti-virus vaccination campaign, an army statement said.
After receiving the vaccine along with the members of the Military Council and a number of officers and soldiers, Aoun urged the personnel of the military institution to follow suit, describing the vaccine as a “necessary means for protecting them and their families and curbing the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.”
This came as caretaker Minister of Health Hamad Hassan held on Thursday a meeting with World Bank's regional director Saroj Kumar Jha to assess the cooperation in terms of the vaccination campaign.
Kumar Jha hailed the progress made regarding the vaccination proccess, affirming the World Bank's support for the purchase of 751,000 additional vaccine doses.
In a statement following his meeting with Hassan, the official said he held good discussion with the health minister to continue collective efforts for a fair, inclusive and equitable vaccine roll out in Lebanon.
For his part, Hassan noted that the firm and continuous cooperation with the World Bank “is a guarantee for the Ministry of Health to achieve the strategy of the national vaccination plan.”
The country recorded on Thursday 3,510 new COVID-19 cases, raising its total number of infections to 489,428. Also, COVID-19 deaths increased by 37 to reach a total of 6,549.
