Leaving the UK without a reasonable excuse to be banned in new Covid laws

A ban on leaving the UK without a reasonable excuse will be included in new coronavirus laws and will come into force from next week.

Legislation for restrictions for the coming months was published on Monday and will come into force from March 29.

The legal papers state that the rules must be reviewed by the Government every 35 days. The document also suggests that anyone who breaks the law could face a £5,000 fine.

The legal document states: “The Regulations also impose restrictions on leaving the United Kingdom without a reasonable excuse (regulation 8).”

The law says no-one may “leave England to travel to a destination outside the United Kingdom, or travel to, or be present at, an embarkation point for the purpose of travelling from there to a destination outside the United Kingdom” without a reasonable excuse.

In February, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced his roadmap on how and when the easing restrictions in the UK will take place.

Earlier today, Government sources confirmed officials were considering the traffic light scheme, so people can go on holiday in lower risk "green" areas.

Although, sources added that it was “quite early days” and suggested the priority would be to reopen the UK economy.

Independent scientists have called for tougher travel restrictions and more formal quarantine measures for all those entering the country from abroad.
