Leaving Cert results 2020: Education Minister Norma Foley gives update on appealing grades and college offers

Education Minister Norma Foley has confirmed Leaving Cert students will be able to appeal grades from September 14.

Fianna Fail TD moved to reassure students that enough time would be provided for students to get their grades and accept college results while defending the department's decision to delay results to September 7.

Traditionally students would receive their results three weeks earlier than that date.

Speaking on RTE's Morning Ireland Ms Foley said: "On September 11 the CAO offers will be released and also I want to acknowledge that there has been incredible engagement and support and cooperation through the CAO and UCAS for the UK system.

"Everything is in place that the results released on 7 September will actually be in line to facilitate both CAO and UCAS offers."

"There will be an opportunity then on the 14 September should students wish to appeal any particular calculated grades they have received.

"And we must remember there will be an opportunity at a later date should students wish to take a written exam."

Ms Foley however could not elaborate on whether or not students waiting on second round offers would have enough time to accept their course and begin studying the same year with Foley insisting "that would be a matter for third level institutions."

She added however: "I do want to acknowledge that they have been huge cooperative in facilitating this process to this point and I have every confidence that they will engage in that process so that students will have maximum opportunities to take up offers."

Minister Foley also insisted that the appeals process will be "turned around as quickly as possible so that students will be in a position to maximise potential to take up another offer should that be the case."

The Student Portal for the Leaving Certificate Calculated Grades will open next Monday.

All of the eligible young people will be able to confirm through this online hub, at 12 noon, that they wish to receive calculated results.

More than 61,000 students will be able to access their final grades on Monday, September 7.
