Leaving Afghanistan: Heartbreak as evacuation deadline looms

THE WORLD THIS WEEK © FRANCE 24

Hundreds of people are still awaiting evacuation – and that's only inside the perimeter of Kabul airport. On the day after twin attacks targeting the US-led evacuation operation, flights out are resuming ahead of an August 31 deadline. The death toll from the blasts continues to rise. As well as dozens of Afghans, 13 US military personnel have been killed: the highest US casualty toll since an attack in Mosul, Iraq in 2004.

France has confirmed it is negotiating with the Taliban and in light of the IS-K attack, the Pentagon has been speaking about the operational reality on the ground.

FRANCE 24 has been putting the spotlight on the voices of Afghan women and girls. Our reporter Catherine Norris-Trent had to change names and blur faces when she interviewed professional women in the Afghan capital.

Produced by Charles Wente, Juliette Laurain and Imen Mellaz.
