Publicly owned golf courses provide affordable access to a sport which can otherwise be outwith the reach of the ordinary player. They are important green lungs in a large built-up area such as London, and would be a huge loss if turned over to housing (Report, 26 August), which, no doubt, would be beyond the means of the ordinary citizens who use them for sport at present.

• I recently unearthed a commemorative set of first-class (27p) stamps issued in 2000 to mark the Queen Mother’s 100th birthday. They showed four generations of the royal family. All of them today are not even second-class.
