Least popular baby names of 2021 - and 14 are on the verge of extinction

The least popular baby names of 2021 have been revealed - and some are on the verge of never making a comeback.

According to parenting site Babycentre, 14 boys and girls names that are at risk of extinction after barely being chosen last year.

Top of the extinction risk list for boys is Piers Clifford, Clive, Daryl, Dwayne, Dwight, Elliot, Hubert, Leslie, Maurice, Norman, Roger, Royston and Vernon.

For women older fashioned names also seem to be falling out of favour with modern parents, including Maud, Doris and Phyllis which have seen a huge reduction in uptake.

Also on that list are Barbara, Bertha, Doreen, Gertrude, Glenda, Kerry, Marjorie, Muriel, Pauline, Tina and Tonya.

In contrast, the most popular baby names in Scotland in 2020 were mainstay Jack for boys and for the girls, Isla finally knocked Olivia off the top spot, reports The Daily Star.

Of the 46,355 babies registered in Scotland in 2020, 354 were named Jack and 347 named Isla.

Making up the top three for girls were Olivia in second place and Emily in third.

For boys Noah was the second most popular name in Scotland and James was holding firm in third place.

But picture completely changed when broken down to local authority areas - with the most popular girls and boys choices drastically changing from region to region.
