Learning to live with Alzheimer's in France

FRANCE IN FOCUS © FRANCE 24

This week, we're focusing on Alzheimer's. The brain disease affects a person's memory and can grow severe enough to impact daily tasks. In France, 900,000 people live with Alzheimer's, and 225,000 new cases are diagnosed each year.

It's believed that 60 percent of Alzheimer's patients will wander away at least once during the course of their disease, and many will do so multiple times. Despite advances in technology like GPS monitoring, some patients who wander off are never found. Finding lost loved ones remains a goal for some.

We also meet Jacques Minchin, diagnosed with Alzheimer's, to find out more about living with the disease.

And we visit one Alzheimer's centre in France trying to strike the right balance between taking care of its patients while offering them a normal quality of life.
