Not even a quarter of extra driving test examiners promised by the Government have been recruited so far, new figures show.
It means the pandemic tests backlog goes on leaving many learners waiting months.
And it’s been worsened by applications this year from people who could not take a test in 2020 because of lockdowns.
Figures obtained by the Liberal Democrats show the Driving and Vehicle Standards Agency have recruited only 74 of a target figure of 300 so far.
A recent report revealed some learners are having to apply at test centres 100 miles away – while others face delays of five months or more to book a test.

The issue has been compounded by a shortage of instructors, down to 38,365 in June 2021 from 46,569 a decade ago.
Liberal Democrat MP Daisy Cooper is demanding the Government speeds up the recruitment of testers to reduce the “scandalous delays” facing learners and help get the country moving again.
