If you’re learning to drive, you can now take a free mock theory test online through the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA).
It’s an ideal way to put your Highway Code learning to the test without fear of failing the real thing - or being out of pocket.
The current theory test costs £23 for would-be car drivers, but this mock exam is completely free and is an ideal way for learners to check their revision knowledge.
There are four separate tests available for car drivers and motorcyclists (50 questions each), as well as for lorry drivers and bus/coach drivers (100 questions each).
You can take any of the practice tests as many times as you like, but each one can take up to an hour to complete.
This practice theory test for car drivers is provided so you can see how the DVSA theory test works and you can take the mock theory test in:
- 'Practice View ’ - designed to work on most PCs, mobiles and tablets.
- ‘Test View’ - this looks similar to the screens at the theory test centre.
You can also use the button on the test page to switch between these two views.
The car driving test has 50 questions, and you need to get 43 right to pass. You have 57 minutes to do it.

There are many paid-for apps offering similar ways to practice for your theory test, but not all of them are official like this one from the DVSA.
