Learner driver taken to court - for stopping past red light

A learner driver was taken to court - for stopping past a red light at a junction.

It was during a driving lesson when Joseph Bell, 18, stopped over the line at a junction on the Colwick Loop Road on December 14 last year.

He admitted failing to comply with the red light - but Nottingham magistrates accepted special circumstances, reports the BBC.

Mr Bell was granted an absolute discharge, meaning he will not have any points put on his driving licence, or have to pay costs.

The BBC reports tje court was told Mr Bell - who was 17 at the time of the lesson - had been slowly approaching the junction in the car, and that his driving instructor was present and also able to take control of the vehicle.

An automatic camera caught it as having stopped into a red light area for 14.8 seconds.

There were no oncoming cars or pedestrians present.

A spokeswoman for Nottinghamshire Police said: “The court has made its judgement and we will reflect on what has been said.”
