A learner driver's mother has left police baffled after she reportedly told her child to break the speed limit to get around other cars.
Road Policing Detective Sergeant Ivan Naspe said officers pulled over the learner driver over on Adelaide Avenue on Saturday after detecting the car at 98km/h in an 80km/h zone.
"Officers were baffled to hear the driver's mum had said to overtake the other cars because they were driving dangerously," he said in a statement.
"There is simply no situation that warrants speeding. It endangers not only your life but those around you.
"I hope our interaction with the learner driver taught a more valuable lesson - that is follow the road rules and always obey the speed limit."
The learner was one of 55 people caught speeding in Canberra on the weekend, police said.
Other offenses this weekend included a 25-year-old Kaleen man caught driving at 135km/h in an 80km/h zone on Gungahlin Drive. He was issued six demerit points and received a $1841 fine.
A 24-year-old Gilmore man was found driving at 122km/h in an 80km/h zone on the Monaro highway. He was fined $700 and issued four demerit points.
Earlier this month, ACT Policing announced they planned to crack down on speeding in the ACT through July, as the number of infringements had risen 30 per cent a month throughout 2020.
On average 490 speeding fines have been handed out each month this year, up from an average of about 337 a month for the past three years.
Officer-in-Charge of Road Policing Detective Inspector Marcus Boorman said at the time that they were detecting "speeds that go beyond stupidity. I'm talking about 140, 170, even 200 kilometres an hour."
Police also revealed this week there had been a spike in drink-driving on the city's roads. Seven people had been busted at more than double the legal limit in the past week.
In one case, a 36-year-old Hawker man was more than four times the legal limit when he blew 0.230 after he was involved in a two-car crash in Weetangera on Thursday, police say.
In another case, a 34-year-old Latham man racked up his fifth drink driving offense after recording a blood alcohol level of 0.180 on Saturday night.
