Learner driver killed pal during police chase in Glasgow after drugs binge

A learner driver who killed a friend having earlier taken a cocktail of drugs has been jailed for five years.

Ramsay Stevenson crashed his Vauxhall Meriva after a six-mile police chase.

Passenger Cameron Donaldson, 20, died eight days after the smash in Baillieston, Glasgow, in October 2018. A woman in the car was also badly hurt.

A judge heard Stevenson, 21, was on bail at the time for other driving offences.

Yesterday, he returned to the High Court in Glasgow after previously pleading guilty to causing death by dangerous driving.

Judge Lord Matthews told Stevenson: “I have read a heart-rending statement from his mother in which she has set out in words what the death has meant to her.”

Police spotted Stevenson driving out of a car park in Shettleston in the early hours of October 1, 2018. He only held a provisional licence and wasn’t insured. The Vauxhall had also been declared off-road.

The court heard Stevenson was told to pull in but “accelerated away”, reaching up to 90mph as officers went after him. He eventually lost control and hit a tree. Passenger Pauline McDowell, 27, was trapped in the motor with Cameron slumped in the back.

Cameron died in hospital, while Pauline was able to leave after about a fortnight.

Stevenson was also banned from driving for 11-and-a-half years.
