Learner driver charged over 20yo man's death near Cairns party

Police had come across the body of the 20-year-old 'by chance'.

Police have charged a 21-year-old learner driver over the death of a 20-year-old man, who was found lying in the middle of a road in Cairns, while a party raged on nearby.

Officers were called to the party in the suburb of Manunda several times on Thursday night last week, where approximately 10 to 15 people were gathered, before finding a badly injured man who had been at the party lying on the street just after 4:00am on Friday.

The 20-year-old was found with violent injuries and responding police tried to perform CPR, but the man was declared dead at the scene.

Officers charged a 21-year-old man from Parramatta Park with one count each of driving without due care and attention causing death and failure to comply with requirements of a learner licence.

Police said there was no driver supervisor in the car with the learner driver.

Earlier, police said officers had attended the party several times over the course of the evening, and had come across the body of the 20-year-old "by chance".

Detectives said people had been coming and going from the party, and celebrations were still happening when officers came across the badly injured man.

The alleged driver is due to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on January 10.
