Learner driver caught on camera speeding at 149mph on M6 Toll road

Police have released video footage of a learner driver speeding at 149mph on a motorway.

Thomas Allsopp, a 24-year-old from Leicestershire, only had a provisional driving licence and was uninsured when he was caught driving at over double the national speed limit in an Audi A8, according to the BBC

Allsopp was caught on camera weaving in and out of traffic on the M6 toll road as he tried to escape West Midlands Police, who spotted him parked in an emergency vehicle access slip road.

Police chased Allsopp until he crashed through exit barriers.

PC Jim Barry from the West Midlands Police said Allsop had shown “no remorse” and only stopped because “he ran out of fuel”.

"At one stage he overtook a recovery truck on a blind bridge entering Minworth village," he said.

"Allsopp showed no remorse and said he had no intention of stopping for officers - only stopping because he ran out of fuel - and agreed he didn't give his three passengers any opportunity to exit his vehicle."

Allsop admitted dangerous driving and other motoring offences and was given an eight-month jail sentence, suspended for 12 months.

He has also been banned from driving for 18 months and told to carry out 80 hours of unpaid work.
