Learner driver arrested by gardai after smashing speed limit on busy motorway

A learner driver was arrested by gardai after a high-speed pursuit on a major Irish motorway.

Road conditions can be dangerous at best on some Irish roads, so when you add in some wind and rain to the mix, the surfaces can easily result in an accident.

But none of this was to the fore of one driver on the M7 recently, as they sped by gardaí going more than 50 km/h over the speed limit.

Learner drivers are not allowed:

  • Drive on motorways
  • Drive unaccompanied
  • Drive without 'L' plates displayed on the front and back windshield

So that was four rule breaks in one fell swoop for the driver, who was subsequently arrested by gardai.

A spokesperson said: "Laois Roads Policing Unit recently detected this Learner driver travelling at 178kph in poor road conditions on the M7 at Ballydavis. They had no L Plates displayed, they were unaccompanied & were not permitted to travel on the Motorway. They were arrested. Proceedings to follow"

Meanwhile, Gardai made four arrests as part of a New Year's checkpoint on a busy Dublin road targeting two specific crimes.

Officers set up their stations on the N81 Tallaght Bypass on New Year's Day, with a large number of vehicles halting drivers on both sides of the road.

Those attached to the Dublin Metropolitan Region (DMR) Roads Policing Unit were specifically interested in drink and drugs driving offences.

People tend to celebrate on New Year's Eve, and this could sometimes put them over the limit the next day.

Four arrests were made throughout the course of the checkpoint on Saturday.
