Leap Card could be replaced by contactless payments in near future according to National Transport Authority

The end of the Leap Card could be in sight as the National Transport Authority is making plans to replace the piece of plastic with phones and bank cards.

The plans for 'next generation ticketing' would see the card being replaced by contactless means of payment.

The National Transport Authority hopes to engage with potential service providers to introduce the Account Based Ticketing.

This would lead to passengers being able to pay for journeys using phones and bank cards through Google Pay and Apple Pay and official ID cards and passports which would replace a commuting card.

But there is a downside to the plans, as it could be 2027 before this form of payment is introduced.

The authority added that the second biggest cause of delays for buses after congestion is drivers taking payments from passengers.
