'Leaks' leading to false reports of French fugitive being apprehended in Glasgow probed by police watchdog

'Leaks' which led to false reports of a fugitive being apprehended at Glasgow Airport are being probed by a police watchdog in France.

On Friday, October 11, authorities at Glasgow Airport arrested a man which a number of French media outlets identified as Xavier Dupont de Ligonnes .

Dupont de Ligonnes is a French fugitive who disappeared in 2011 following the deaths of his wife and four children in Nantes.

Following investigations by Police Scotland, it emerged that the man arrested was not Dupont de Ligonnes.

Pierre Sennes, the prosecutor of the Republic of Nantes, is now asking for the General Inspectorate of National Police in France to probe the origin of the leaks which saw Dupont de Ligonnes' name passed to the media, according to French paper le Parisien .

The paper also reports claims from French sources saying it was Police Scotland who confirmed Dupont de Ligonnes was the man arrested at Glasgow Airport.

Police Scotland, however, insist that is not the case.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Police Scotland never stated, either publicly or privately, that the fingerprints matched that of Xavier Dupont de Ligonnès or that the man in custody was Xavier Dupont de Ligonnès."
