Leah McCourt's stealth trip to USA ends up in world title glory

A stealth trip to the United States has ended up in world title glory for Leah McCourt.

The Co Down star won gold at the IBJJF No Gi World Championships in Texas on Friday.

McCourt revealed she travelled across the Atlantic on her own to compete in the major competition.

The 29-year-old didn't tell anyone about the trip, especially her coach who wanted her to rest after competing at Bellator 267 in London last week.

McCourt said on Instagram: "A dream come true !! Brown belt IBJJF No Gi World champion 2021. All glory to god, all for you and because of you.

"Last Friday co main event in Wembley @bellatormma then decided three days later to fly to Texas on my own and compete. I didn’t tell anyone especially not my coach he wanted me to rest.

"My first tournament in three years after shoulder surgery and the pandemic.

"Thanks to @air.una for making me do it and your never ending belief and @andrewmcgahon for coaching via WhatsApp - and all my team and coaches @teamtorreshq. Also so my love @fffioneira coaching out here.

"Busy 7 days - Missed competing it so much and really helps level up and stay sharp between fights. Thanks @bellatormma legal team & @kingsbridgehospital for making it possible to travel to America.

"Now going to see Dallas and finally celebrate."

McCourt beat Jessica Borga over three rounds at last week's Bellator 267 at Wembley's SSE Arena.

It was her sixth win on the bounce and edges her closer to a world title shot.

She had hoped to return to action next month when Bellator 270 takes place at Dublin's 3Arena on November 5.

Instead she managed to sneak in a world title win in the interim.

Incredible achievement.
