Leah Galton hailed the hard work done on the training ground as key to her quickfire brace which set Manchester United Women on their way to a convincing 5-0 win over Birmingham.
Galton arrived late at the back post to convert a 16th-minute Alessia Russo cross and did likewise two minutes later from Ella Toone’s ball across.
The 27-year-old was delighted to reap the rewards of her tailored preparation as United raced into a 4-0 lead by half-time against a side who stunned leaders Arsenal last weekend.
“All week we worked on it [back post runs],” she said. “That was an area to exploit in their team.
"So I think I've listened and we've done it and it's paid off. I'm really happy with that.
“We could have been better in the second half. We did drop our standards a bit but I think, in the first half, we looked good and if we play like that against other teams, we will do well. We just need to keep the standard from the first half.”
Katie Zelem and Russo were also on target for United either side of an Emily Ramsey own goal as Marc Skinner’s side started a busy week in style.
Arsenal are the opponents in the FA Women's Continental Tyres League Cup in midweek before Tottenham visit for a league encounter next weekend which could be pivotal in the race for the Champions League spots.
“We're just focusing on every game as it comes because we have them really thick and fast at the moment,” Galton added.
“Obviously we've got three in the next six days - well, that was the first one in the next six days - so we've got to keep fit.
“We've got to keep focused and I think just taking it game by game at the moment is the best thing for us.”
