Leah, 15, has always struggled with her mental health - now she's on a mission to help others

She may only be 15, but Leah Robson knows what it's like to struggle with mental health.

The teenager from Wythenshawe suffers with anxiety and ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder).

Several years ago, Leah was permanently excluded from school because of her behaviour and instead was made to attend a Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) in Northern Moor.

She was cut off from mainstream education, as well as her friends, and became quiet and isolated.

But for mum, Michelle, Leah's move to the PRU was the best thing that could have happened to her.

"She's always been very intelligent," the 41-year-old said. "She would often finish her work well ahead of the class and be left with nothing to do. This is when she'd cause problems.

"Leah would run around the classroom because nothing else was put in place for her support wise."

As well as Leah's ADHD diagnosis, she is also suspected of having a personality disorder, and is due to undergo further assessment.

Leah says she found school difficult because she didn't feel she had the support she needed mentally.

She puts a lot of this down to funding, believing there just wasn't the cash - or resources - to help her, and worries that there are others out there like her struggling alone.

That's why Leah decided to try and make a change by raising money for the Young Minds Trust - a charity that helps children and young people by making sure they get the best possible mental health support and have the resilience to overcome life’s difficulties.

On June 2, a week after her 16th birthday, she will take part in a sponsored tandem skydive.

She is paying for the jump out of her own pocket, with every penny raised going direct to the charity.

"I don't have any fear," she joked.

"It's something I've always wanted to do and now I can do it and help people as well."

Leah has already smashed her £500 fundraising target via sponsorship forms, but hopes to raise as much as she can.

She says she'd like to see the money go towards counselling and mentoring for young people, particularly in schools.

"It's something that's really important to me," she added.

Michelle explained that Leah doesn't get a prom at her PRU and has been feeling down about missing out.

So to cheer her up she decided to give her some money as a well done for working so hard towards her upcoming GCSE exams.

But rather than spend it all on herself, Leah told her mum she wanted to use it to pay for the skydive.

"She Googled the charity herself. She knew what she wanted to do and who she wanted to help," Michelle said.

"Both me and her dad are very proud of her. She's a pleasant, well-mannered girl.

"She's struggled all her life with her health and mental health, but she has never blamed her bad decisions on her ADHD, she always takes full responsibility.

"If I'd have known what I know now I would have insisted she went to the PRU from Year 7.

"They have been absolutely amazing with her.

"Not only has she come on educationally, but also socially.

"When she was excluded from school not only did she lose mainstream, she lost her friends.

"She went from being in a big group of girls to having no one and being totally isolated.

"I believe if she'd had more support she could have stayed in mainstream."

As well as sponsorship forms, Leah has also set up a Justgiving page. To donate visit https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/michelle-robson5 .
