League Two transfers: Darrell Clarke snaps up ex-Manchester United striker, Swindon lose star

The summer transfer window officially opens on Wednesday, but Bristol Rovers and their League Two rivals have been busy for weeks making additions to their squads.

The Gas have already agreed four deals with free agents Paul Coutts, Sam Finley, Mark Hughes and Nick Anderton, and the club is working hard behind the scenes to secure further signings.

Their rivals, too, have been busy, with several intriguing deals affecting fourth-tier clubs emerging in the past 24 hours – with an emphasis on getting as much business over the line before pre-season begins at the end of the month.

Here is a round-up of the latest League Two transfer news.

Ex-Manchester United starlet joins Vale

Darrell Clarke enjoyed a decent run at the end of the season with Port Vale, lifting the Valiants from the bottom end of the table to a 13-place finish.

The Bristol Rovers legend will be eager to continue those improvements into next season, and he has started his summer rebuild with the signing of former Manchester United prospect James Wilson.

Wilson burst on the scene with a brace on his first Premier League start for United in 2014 and he was expected to progress from there, but a series of loan spells have not quite gone as planned.

He scored eight goals for Salford City last season and has joined Vale on a free transfer.

"His pedigree is fantastic and I’m sure he will prove a great attacking threat for us next season," Clarke said.

Swindon lose star man Twine

Like Rovers, Swindon Town endured a miserable season, but the rapid emergence of Scott Twine was a rare cause for optimism.

The 21-year-old started the season on loan at Newport County, where he scored seven goals from midfield in 24 appearances.

That form, and a series of long-range screamers, prompted Swindon to recall Twine, and he added seven more goals for the Robins as they suffered relegation to League Two.

But he was always destined for a move this summer, with MK Dons pulling off a coup to secure his signature.

Colchester turn to Ipswich Town again

Colchester United scrapped to avoid relegation to the National League under Hayden Mullins, and he hopes by adding more experience this summer they will embark on a more enjoyable campaign come August.

Colchester have already brought in veteran midfielder Cole Skuse after his release from Ipswich Town, and the Us are turning to Portman Road again for another highly-experienced addition.

The East Anglian Daily Times reports they will sign former Tractor Boys captain Luke Chambers in the coming days.
