League Two club set to beat Championship Barnsley to ex-Bristol Rovers man

A League Two side is set to beat Championship Barnsley to the signing of former Bristol Rovers goalkeeper Adam Smith.

The 26-year-old stopper was released by the Gas at the end of the season having spent the majority of the campaign as back-up to loanee Jack Bonham at the Memorial Stadium.

He has been linked with a move to both Barnsley and League Two Forest Green Rovers, but it is the latter who have managed to secure his signature according to the Stroud News and Journal .

Forest Green were in need of new goalkeeper after Lewis Ward returned to his parent club Reading following a successful loan spell at the club.

Meanwhile, Barnsley were preparing for a situation where they could lose their current first-choice 'keeper Adam Davies to Stoke City, but they have since signed Bradley Collins from Chelsea on a four-year deal as a replacement.

Should Davies' sale go through it should have something of a domino effect, with Stoke themselves expected to sell Jack Butland to a Premier League side.

Smith, 26, played the majority of his first team football for Northampton Town before moving to Rovers in July 2017. In his first season at the Pirates under manager Darrell Clarke he and Slocombe were neck and neck as to who was first choice and Smith played 26 games for the club in 2017/18.
