League One squad restrictions Bolton Wanderers, Sheffield Wednesday and Portsmouth face next season

Teams in League One such as Bolton Wanderers will face first team playing squad limits next season in the third tier of English football.

League One will have some big teams in it next season, including Wanderers, Sheffield Wednesday, Portsmouth and Ipswich Town for certain.

There is also the prospect of the likes of Sunderland and Blackpool also staying in the division, with the duo in the play-offs along with Oxford United and Lincoln City and only one will be in the Championship next season.

For part of this season, clubs in Leagues One and Two were subjected to annual salary caps of £2.5m in the former and £1.5m in the latter.

However, these were both scrapped in February following a successful appeal by the Professional Footballers' Association.

Last season in League Two which ended in automatic promotion for Wanderers, Bolton were limited to using 23 players.

And as things stand, League One and Two clubs are restricted to 20 senior players, including goalkeepers, for next season.

However, YorkshireLive reports that clubs are said to be in advanced discussions about raising the threshold to 22, excluding goalkeepers.

The revised plans applies to ‘senior’ players, aged over 21, so clubs could still have an unlimited number of squad members under that age.

The Professional Footballers' Association called for teams at all three levels to be allowed to name 25-man squads in an open letter to EFL clubs and players.

Wanderers are poised to announce their retained list with several players out of contract this summer as things stand.

Those first team players who are contracted beyond this summer at the club at present include Kieran Lee, Nathan Delfouneso, Reiss Greenidge, Antoni Sarcevic, MJ Williams, Liam Edwards, Brandon Comley, Dennis Politic, Liam Gordon, Ronan Darcy, George Thomason, Ricardo Almeida Santos and Eoin Doyle.
