League of Ireland return not a done deal as FAI chiefs agree to review decision

The FAI board will meet tomorrow night to review the decision to resume the SSE Airtricity League on July 31.

The majority of the Premier Division clubs were set against the 2020 season sticking to the existing promotion-relegation format that could see two go down despite the curtailed 18-game campaign.

Following a meeting of the Premier Clubs Alliance last night, a letter was dispatched to the FAI board listing their reasons why the National League Executive Committee (NLEC) called it wrong with the decision.

Of all the top flight clubs, only Shamrock Rovers voted against the one up-one down format.

And their Premier Division rivals are angry that the Hoops, one of the three clubs representing the top tier at the NLEC meeting, stuck to their guns and voted with the two First Division clubs that were represented.

The PCA is also annoyed that the return was trumpeted yesterday in a League statement before the FAI board had ratified it.

Although welcoming the decision as the "least disruptive" of four options on the table, FAI deputy interim CEO Niall Quinn did say in an interview that the decision was subject to the board's agreement.

Some top tier clubs went public with their unhappiness yesterday, with Sligo Rovers claiming the decision was "grossly unjust" and David Rowe, the club's treasurer, mentioning the possibility of a boycott, while other clubs have discussed taking legal action.

News this afternoon of the pending FAI board review comes ahead of a planned meeting of the NLEC tomorrow on the structure of the league beyond this season.
