League of Ireland football back in Limerick as Treaty United take place in First Division

League of Ireland football is back in Limerick after the FAI handed Treaty United a spot in a 10-team First Division.

Shamrock Rovers II competed in the league last year and had been awarded a licence for 2021 but they were refused entry by the FAI, with Treaty replacing them in the second tier.

New entity Dublin County FC were also in the running for a place in the league but missed out.

Limerick FC dropped out of the league after a disastrous 2019 season and Limerick United applied to replace them for 2020 before later withdrawing their application.

The new entity eventually settled on the name Treaty United and entered teams into the Women's National League and Women's Under-17 league last year.

Former Limerick FC boss Tommy Barrett was recently appointed Treaty manager and will take charge for the start of the new First Division campaign on March 26.

"Licences for the 2021 season were awarded by the Independent Licensing Committee on Friday," an FAI statement read.

"On receipt earlier today of the NLEC recommendation that the First Division comprise of 10 teams, the FAI Board then took its decision this afternoon."
