League of Ireland clubs could play European games at 'neutral hubs' in Greece or Hungary

Ireland's four European representatives could yet play their Champions League and Europa League qualifiers at ‘neutral hubs’ in Greece or Hungary.

But that will only happen as a last resort.

UEFA has revealed its contingency plans in case Covid-19 travel restrictions affect the scheduling of matches once Monday’s draw is known.

Venues across Poland, Hungary, Greece and Cyprus have been identified by UEFA to host qualifiers if necessary.

Dundalk are due in Champions League action on August 18/19 with Shamrock Rovers, Bohemians and Derry City entering the Europa League on August 27.

Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, matches will be played as one-off ties rather than the usual two-legged affairs.

Clubs drawn at home must propose a neutral venue if travel restrictions make it impossible to play at the original venue.

If the home team cannot secure a suitable neutral venue, they can ask UEFA for use of one of the fallback hubs in Poland, Hungary, Greece or Cyprus.

Hungary and Greece are both on the Irish government’s ‘green list’ which means players, coaches and officials would not have to quarantine on their return to Ireland.

Cyprus was on the Government’s initial list but was one of five countries removed earlier this week after a spike in Covid cases.

Neutral hubs in Portugal and Germany after being used to finish the 2019/20 Champions League and Europa League campaigns respectively.
