League Cup, Scottish Cup and now Jason Kerr eyes Europa League giant-killing

He captained the club to League Cup and Scottish Cup glory.

Now St Johnstone skipper Jason Kerr is plotting a Europa League giant-killing.

The Perth club have the chance to create more incredible memories in their two-legged third qualifying round tie with Galatasaray.

The first leg takes place in Istanbul on Thursday night and Saints are daring to dream all over again.

“Leading the boys out in a Scottish Cup final has been the pinnacle of my career so far,” Kerr said.

“But playing against Galatasaray will be right up there and if we can get a result then it could top everything.

“We feel like the next step is to do well in Europe and we feel we’re capable of getting a result.”

Kerr thinks there is no point in even getting on the plane if the mindset isn’t to win. Saints are confident they can cause problems.

“If we don’t believe we can go there and cause them problems then we’d be as well staying at home,” Kerr said.

“We think we’ve got a top side here and that we can really muster something up to give them a good test.

“It would be amazing if we can keep it alive and get a big crowd back at Perth for the second leg.

“But the main thing is this week, it’s a hard place to go and it’s going to be very hard to get a result.

“We feel that this team is capable of doing that.”

Galatasaray were knocked out of this very competition by Rangers last season.

Kerr said: “Rangers are a top side and they showed that last season, winning the title without losing a game in the league.

“Galatasaray are obviously a top side but if Rangers can beat them then why can’t we?

“We gave Rangers a lot of problems last season, we put them out of the Scottish Cup in the quarter-finals before going on to win it.

“So if Rangers can cause Galatasaray problems then I’m sure we can cause them problems too.”

He continued: “We are under no illusions that they are a really good squad and will be a really tough test for us.

“It’s Galatasaray, one of the top teams in Europe, so we are going to respect them as much as we can but we are top side as well and showed that last season, so we are really going to have a go at them.”

Kerr, who has been the subject of interest from south of the border, reiterated how exciting a time this is for St Johnstone.

He said: “My head is fully focused on this season and on St Johnstone. It always has been even when there was interest.

“It has been a busy time and it’s going to get even busier this month with league and European games as well as the Premier Sports Cup starting.

“So I am not thinking about anything like that, it’s a really exciting time to be involved with St Johnstone so that’s where all my focus is.

“There has been interest in numerous players but that just shows how well we did last season and it’s flattering.”

The 24-year-old’s St Johnstone journey has been a special one, rising through the ranks to already be classed a club legend.

He missed out on Saints’ last voyage into Europe and a trip to Lithuania to play FK Trakai in 2017.

But he concluded: “To be playing against one of the best teams in Europe four years down the line is what dreams are made of.”
