Britain’s leading bomb disposal expert Major Chris Hunter is selling his prized SAS ring to help the needy.
The war hero is auctioning the 9ct gold collectors’ item to help pay for a Royal British Legion foodbank operation.
Maj Hunter, 47, and his team of fellow veterans launched the service during the lockdown.
He said: “I am selling off the ring because I believe possessions aren’t everything. It’s the memories that count every time.
"The pandemic has left many people isolated and vulnerable. And the knock-on effects will leave an awful lot of people short of food and other supplies.
“The foodbank has been a huge success and has been extremely satisfying... We needed more funds to boost the process of getting supplies to people.
“During and after my time as a soldier I’ve witnessed how much people suffer in poverty-stricken regions. At home I realised we need to help each other here too.”
The foodbank and delivery service is based at the RBL branch in Hay-on-Wye, Powys, near where Maj Hunter lives.
His signet ring – embossed with the Who Dares Wins motto – is a one-of-a-kind piece gifted to Maj Hunter by colleagues.
The soldier-turned-author launched the auction on Facebook. It has attracted bids well in excess of £1,000.
He was awarded the Queen’s Gallantry Medal while serving in the last Iraq War.
Maj Hunter was so good at tackling improvised explosive devices that insurgents slapped a £100,000 bounty on his head.
He has retired from the forces but still teaches his skills to others.
